Larry E. Ashing, age 82, of Grinnell died on December 7, 2023 at home surrounded by loved ones.

Per his request there will be no funeral service. Larry's family will receive friends at the memorial gathering held from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. A private family inurnment will be held at Hickory Grove Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be designated to the Larry Ashing Memorial Fund, mailed to the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112.

Larry was born in Grinnell on October 31, 1941 to Lester and Ellen (Taylor) Ashing.

Larry attended Newburg grade school, graduating from Gilman High School with the class of 1960. He then went on to graduate from Universal Trade School in Omaha, NE. Following graduation, he returned to Grinnell and worked for Van Wenchel Chevy Dealership and Miracle Recreation Co. He then opened his own business, Larry's Welding, later expanding into Ashing Crane & Welding. After several years he decided to close the welding service and operated the crane service only. Larry was a member of the Midwest Welder's Association and Grinnell United Church of Christ-Congregational.

On June 23, 1963 Larry married Rosemary Hauersperger at Hickory Grove Church. The couple made their home near Grinnell and were blessed with three children; Robert, Susan, and Steven. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Rosemary; children, Robert (Pam) Ashing, Susan Hovenga, Steven (Jennifer) Ashing; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Sarah Ashing, Mary and Laura Hovenga, and John and Reese Ashing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother William, sister-in-law Doris Ashing, son-in-law Henry Hovenga, and parents in law Henry and Elizabeth Hauersperger.
