Obituary

Kolson Lee Havlik passed away early Thursday morning, April 28, 2022 in Fargo, North Dakota. He was 19 years old. Kolson was born on July 31, 2002. Even in his first weeks home he was a happy, engaging little guy who had a lot to say in the form of baby babble. Later, as he was learning to take his first couple of steps, he took off into a run! As an energetic and funny kid, he brought his family so much joy! We were all blessed to watch the baby brother grow into a quick-witted, strong-willed, handsome young man. Kolson ended up growing quite tall- even towering over his oldest siblings Andrew and Katie who helped so much with Kolson's care when he was a little guy. With Kolson at a little over six foot four inches tall, we were all looking up to him! Kolson loved to learn and was diligent. In high school classes at Ames High, Kolson enjoyed Photography and Science class outings for astronomy and nature studies, but Kolson was especially encouraged by his English teacher who recognized the heart he put into his writing. Kolson grew to know that if he set his mind on something he was interested in, he could accomplish it. Kolson's early learning was bolstered by being introduced to Yughio and Pokemon card games by a dear family friend. That desire to read and play those cards grew into one of Kolson's greatest joys... passing the hours playing cards with his older brother Elijah. Over the years, Kolson enjoyed hanging out at Multiverse card shop in Grinnell, IA, competing successfully (even winning) Yugioh and Pokémon tournaments, often against Grinnell College players. On a summer trip one year, Kolson and Elijah played Magic in Round Rock, TX and Lawrence, KS. Elijah supported Kolson's talent by entering them in Magic tournaments against adult competitors in Ames, IA where Kolson often won or took second. Kolson's first influences in extreme sports were his older brother Abe on BMX and his older sister Ellie on aggressive skates. Kolson started out on aggressive skates, transitioned to a self-formed scooter club riding all over Grinnell and learning tail-whips. Kolson ultimately mastered BMX riding, with Abe's hearty approval! Kolson could shred on anything at the skate park and won awards. He was admired for his talent and athleticism. Kolson was active in the campaign to build a new skate park in Grinnell, IA, participating in community events like parades and ramp-building. He greatly enjoyed trips with his buddies to surrounding skate parks in Iowa- Pella, Oskaloosa and Knoxville, and one that included a competition in Marshalltown where he placed. Kolson earned his prized BMX bike, built by a dear friend. One of Kolson's favorite summer activities was swimming. His sister Angel would accompany him to the local pool for days full of fun and Iowa sunshine, learning new flips off the boards with friends. Kolson also enjoyed listening to alternative music and exploring unique types of music and songs with others. He had an ear for music like his sister Klara who will share that gift they shared today. Most recently, Kolson worked at a grocery warehouse. Before that he worked at PurFoods. But Kolson's favorite job was efficiently running the massively busy soda fountain at Hickory Park in Ames, IA, keeping a smile on the waitresses' faces. Anyone who recently had Kolson as a passenger anywhere probably saw how much he loved to play video games. Kolson would set up his Nintendo switch on the dashboard! Kolson was always eager to share his passion for his hobbies with others. In his younger days he bonded with his little sister Emma teaching her how to play Pokémon and watching anime. Kolson also loved spending time teaching his nephew Ben how to play video games. Kolson's passion for video games eventually turned into writing reviews with the goal of creating YouTube content. He earned all his computer equipment and gear for that endeavor. Kolson aspired to pursue a career in becoming a content creator. And he had a longer term goal of making a game with the only purpose being to enjoy the fun of it. Kolson loved animals and always had the habit of greeting our family pets who'd be very excited to see him! But now, our beloved dogs, Cooper, Lady, Dottie and even Blaze are greeting him. Kolson dreamed of traveling in search of the perfect town where he'd settle down and was adventurous enough to even consider Alaska! Kolson was always quick to stand up for people when he heard others talking negatively about them and he followed his ideals about what he believed to be correct and just. Kolson always said how he just needed to find his one person, the one for him in life. In retrospect, we all see that at one time or another, we were that person- the one he was giving his all. Kolson wanted everything he did to be 100% of him. Kolson didn't aspire to greatness, he lived it. Our beloved son, brother, and friend will be dearly missed. Kolson is survived by his mom, Tammy, dad, Joe, his big brothers and sisters, Andrew, Katie, Abe, Ellie, Klara, Elijah, and Angel, and his little sister, Emma. And Grandpa John.
