Kevin John Lang, 57, of Sunnyvale, California and formerly of Grinnell, died on Monday, April 29, 2019 at his residence.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 28, 2019 at the Grinnell Christian Church. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Fellowship will follow the service in the Family Life Center of the church. A memorial fund in Kevin's name will be established to benefit the Grinnell-Newburg High School Dollars for Scholars program. Kevin was born on June 28, 1961 and raised in Grinnell by his parents Patricia Lang of Grinnell and John Lang of Traer. During his youth, he developed a strong interest in computers and spent many hours at the computer center in Darby Gymnasium at Grinnell College. During his school years, he excelled in academics and music, being selected for All-State Chorus and Band. He was valedictorian of his graduating class at Grinnell-Newburg High School in 1979.
Kevin attended Grinnell College from 1979-1983 where he majored in mathematics and was a member of the Grinnell Singers. His final semester was spent in Moscow studying Russian. Kevin was awarded the Archibald Prize, "given annually to the senior who has achieved the highest-grade point average during four years of study." He continued on to graduate school at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh where he received his doctoral degree in computer science in 1989.
He was a computer science researcher for NEC Research Institute, FastForward Networks, Inktomi, Overture Labs, and Yahoo Research. Kevin filed over 13 patents and published more than 30 research papers during his time at Yahoo, and he was recognized by the company as a Master Inventor in 2015.
Kevin was an avid reader and enjoyed biking, hiking and skiing in the California mountains near his home. Among his many varied interests were photography and pinhole camera building.
He is survived by his loving family; mother, Patricia Lang of Grinnell; father, John (Rosanne) Lang of Traer, Iowa; brother, David Lang of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; half-sisters, Elizabeth Lang of Manassas, Virginia, and Christiana (Justin) Wiebbecke of Baxter, Iowa; and two half-nephews and many caring aunts, uncles and cousins.
Preceding him in death were his grandparents James Russell and Agnes Christiana (Graham) Lang, John Luke and Clara Evelyn (Figland) Cogley, and seven aunts, four uncles, and three cousins all of whom are deeply missed.
