Obituary

Kevin Dean Hawkins, 63, of Grinnell, IA passed away on April 12, 2026, at UnityPoint- Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, IA.

A memorial gathering will be held from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, April 20, 2026, at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, IA.

Kevin was born on September 30, 1962, in Grinnell, IA to Elmer Dean and Blythe Coral (Osborn) Hawkins.

Following high school Kevin enlisted in the Army. He served 3 years total, with 2 years served in Germany. He was awarded an Army Service Ribbon and an Overseas Service Ribbon. He also received decorations for Sharpshooter and M-16 Rifle. He then transferred to the Iowa National Guard in which he served for over a year.

Kevin worked most of his life for casinos. He was a poker dealer and supervisor. He worked for Casinos in Arizona and for Meskwaki Casino in Tama, IA. He started working for Meskwaki when they first opened their doors.

On February 16, 2007, Kevin was united marriage to Kimberly (Parker) at First Presbyterian Church in Grinnell, IA.

Kevin was known to everyone he knew and loved as Hawk. Kevin loved spending time with his grandkids, taking them out to eat, shopping and taking them to the movies. He enjoyed riding his Harley, playing cards, especially poker (5 card Omaha), hanging with friends, and his dogs, Mini-me, Bella, Spike, Blue, and Yoda.

Kevin is survived by his wife, Kimberly, his daughter, Melea (Chris) Ferguson, his sons, Shane (Julie) Rose, and Tim Rose, his step-daughter, Elizabeth Van Sant, and Amanda (Jason) Thompson, his grandchildren, Robert Ferguson, Nicole Mc Carver, Herizon Rose, Kazen Rose, Christopher Rose, Kiera Orndorff, Thea Duncan, Shelby Reams, and Jacob Reams, his sister, Kathy Hawkins, nephew, Randy Crone, his former daughter-in-law, Kristence Rose, and many great nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Blythe, his son, Christopher Wonders, and his brother-in-law, who was more like a brother, Frosty Hulin.
