Obituary

Kent Muller Rasmussen, 93, of Grinnell, passed away on July 9, 2026. Born on June 23, 1933, in Kimballton, IA, he was the son of Emanuel and Dagny Rasmussen.

He joined the United States Army in 1953 and served in Germany until receiving his honorable discharge in 1955.

Kent married his high school sweetheart, Lela Mae Mathisen, on September 2, 1955. The couple moved to Ames, IA where Kent earned his degree from Iowa State University and became a lifelong Cyclone fan.

Following college, Kent accepted a position as an Iowa State Bank Examiner with the Iowa Division of Banking. He enjoyed a distinguished 36-year career doing work he truly loved. The family made their home in Atlantic, IA until 1972, when Kent transferred to Grinnell as a Senior Examiner. He retired in 1999.

Kent treasured attending the activities of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Although he never farmed professionally, he was a "closet farmer" who loved helping friends with various farming projects. He enjoyed old tractors and proudly drove one in the Grinnell Ag Day Parade. He also had a passion for antique cars and enjoyed owning and caring for one. One of his favorite pastimes was gathering with friends over a cup of coffee.

Those who knew Kent will remember him as a true gentleman and devoted provider for his family. He was humble, quietly faithful, and a man whose ethics, integrity, and honesty were beyond question. His dry sense of humor often brought smiles to the faces of family and friends.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Kent is survived by his children, Greg (Deb) Rasmussen, Lori Rasmussen Vande Stouwe, and Lana Rasmussen; his brothers, Ivan Rasmussen and Karl Rasmussen; his grandchildren, Aaron (Lynn) Rasmussen, Erika (Doug) Jack, Casie (Ryan) Vande Stouwe, Zane (Rhonda) Rasmussen, Briana (Jayson) Gaunt, and Oliver (Vinita) Vande Stouwe; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Lela Mae Rasmussen; his sister, Judith Meehan; his brother-in-law, William Meehan; his grandson, James Kent Rasmussen; his great-grandson, Eisac Adam Kurk; and two nephews and one niece.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Kent's life from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026, at the Grinnell Eagles Club. A private family burial will be held at Hazelwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be designated to Lori Vande Stouwe and mailed in care of Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112.
