Kenneth Tedrick, Sr., age 79 of Grinnell, died on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at the Mayflower Community Health Care Center. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, May 10, 2018 at the Smith Funeral Home with Pastor Len Eberhart officiating. Pallbearers are Carson Haines, Stephanie Haines, Gary Lowry, Ken Haines, Mike Hatcher, and Rick Van Wyhe. Interment will be at West Liberty Cemetery near Montezuma. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home and his family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be designated to the Poweshiek Animal League Shelter (PALS) and may be mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Kenneth Vernon Tedrick, Sr. was born on January 23, 1939 in Old Washington, Ohio to William Vernon Tedrick and Helen Irene (Davenport) Tedrick. He was raised in Reynoldsburg, Ohio and graduated from Reynoldsburg High School with the class of 1957. Ken was united in marriage to Bessie Catherine Millar at the Pickerington United Methodist Church in Pickerington, Ohio on September 23, 1958. He honorably served in the United States Navy from 1958 until 1961 and was stationed in San Diego, California and Bermuda. He was honorably discharged and returned to Ohio where Ken and Bessie farmed together. The couple moved to Grinnell in 1985, where Ken retired from United McGill Corporation after working 36 years as a welder, taught apprenticeship classes, and was the Superintendent of the Iowa plant. Ken's nickname for many years was "Grumpy," which certainly didn't describe who he was. He was a man who dearly loved his family and was very supportive of his grandchildren's activities. He was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for hunting morel mushrooms, deer, turkey and pheasant, as well as fishing with family and friends. Ken will be remembered for the love of his family, his witty quotes and one-liners, his fun-loving personality and his zest for life. Ken is survived by his wife of 59 years, Bessie Tedrick of Grinnell; daughter, Catherine (Rick) Van Wyhe of Grinnell; son, Kenneth Vernon Tedrick, Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio; two grandchildren, Carson Haines of Montezuma and Stephanie Haines of Portland, Maine; and siblings, Donald (Betty) Tedrick of Canton, Georgia and Sharon Sherman of DeFuniak Springs, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law, DJ Haines.
