Kathryn Thompson, 70, of Grinnell died March 8, 2008, at Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Pallbearers will be Tim Bjelland, Mike Hagge, Ryan and Rick Thompson, and Steven and Scott Goedken. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery, rural Jasper County. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 8:00 Tuesday, at the Smith Funeral Home and where the family will be present from 7:00 to 8:00 Tuesday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. The daughter of Kenneth and Zella Johannas Hockey, she was born June 9, 1937, in rural Montezuma. She attended rural school near her home and was a 1954 graduate of Montezuma High School. She then moved to Des Moines and attended Arthur Murray Dance School. She later moved to Grinnell and was employed at Iowa Southern Utilities in Grinnell and later Maytag in Newton. On July 5, 1958, she was married to Eldon Thompson, in Unionville, Missouri, and the couple continued to live in Grinnell. She was employed for the Grinnell-Newburg School District in various capacities including secretary and retired in 1999 after 25 years of service. Kathy enjoyed her family and attending all their activities. She enjoyed music, scrap-booking, and NASCAR, and was an avid fan of Jeff Gordon. She held a passion for writing poetry and several of her poems have been included in the Iowa Poetry Book. Survivors include her three children, Kurt (Kim) Thompson of Madrid, Rhonda (Tim) Bjelland of Laurel, and Rhinda Goedken of Cedar Rapids; her former husband, Eldon Thompson of Grinnell; and five grandchildren, Ryan (Bethany) Thompson of Des Moines, Rick (McKenzie) Thompson of Boone, Kale Marie Bjelland of Laurel, and Steven and Scott Goedken of Cedar Rapids.
