Joyce Lee Van Renterghem, age 82, of Malcom, died Sunday, March 29, 2026, at UnityPoint – Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 3, 2026, at Smith Funeral Home in Brooklyn. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the Michael J. Manatt Center following the burial. Family will greet friends during a visitation held one hour prior to the service, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be designated to the Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department or the East Poweshiek Ambulance Service and mailed in care of Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112.
Joyce was born January 31, 1944, to Charles Edward and Doris Ann (Martin) Rhodes. She attended BGM High School and later earned her GED.
Joyce was united in marriage to Laird Van Renterghem in the spring of 1958. Together, they raised two children, Debra and Phillip. In addition to caring for her family, Joyce worked a variety of jobs throughout her life, including positions at Char-Du Manufacturing, Monte Manufacturing, Front Street Tap, and Farmer Nick's Restaurant.
Joyce enjoyed painting, woodworking, and quilting. She also enjoyed bowling and rolle bolle. She loved camping, fishing, and traveling, often making cherished memories on spontaneous trips to visit family or go antiquing.
Joyce will be remembered as a hardworking woman who deeply loved her family.
She is survived by her children, Debra Inman and husband Rick of Malcom and Phillip Van Renterghem of Malcom; her siblings, Doris Bunn and Billie Jo Henry; her grandchildren, Melissa Foels and husband Michael and Jodi Peters and husband Chad; her great-grandchildren, Taylyn Breeden, Liam Peters, McKenna Heinselman and husband Caleb, Chandler Carl and partner Alicia Griggs, Madelyn Carl and partner Austin Schad, Kayleigh Inman and partner Jeffrey Johannsen, Maci Inman, and Bryan Inman; and her great-great-grandchildren, Kohen Johannsen and Raelynn Rose Carl.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Doris Rhodes; her husband, Laird Van Renterghem; her siblings, Don Rhodes and Edna Werenburg; her grandson, Jesse Inman; her father-in-law, Fred Van Renterghem; her mother-in-law, Lois Van Renterghem; her brother-in-law, John Van Renterghem; nieces, Janice Korns and Renee Frisby; and nephew, Charlie Korns.
