Obituary

Joyce was born November 6, 1948 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She joined her mother Mildred Enola Caylor Scull, father Reno James Scull, and sister Marcia Elaine Scull on the family farm northeast of New Sharon. In 1957, the family moved to Lynnville, Iowa where Mildred and Reno worked for the Lynnville-Sully School District. Joyce was Class President, and graduated as co-Salutatorian with the Lynnville-Sully class' of 1966. After high school, Joyce attended and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa. Starting her sophomore year was difficult, as she had recently lost her mother to cancer. In customary Joyce style, she strove ahead, was accepted into the academic sorority, Alpha Chi Omega and graduated with honors with a Bachelors' degree in teaching German. While at UNI, a student trip to Germany, piqued Joyce's interest in travel which she then pursued throughout her life. Joyce's first teaching position was in Racine, WI, where she taught high school German for two years, before accepting a position with the AC Nielsen Company in Mason City, IA in 1973. Joyce was the first female supervisor, and set the right tone for all women to follow! After Mason City, her career expanded to San Francisco, Minneapolis and Chicago's corporate office headquarters. Joyce worked many years in the market research industry and then moved on to once again become the teacher she had been earlier - but this time with a more international twist! As an adjunct faculty at the College of Lake County, she taught English as a Second Language to students from many countries - Japan, Russia and much of Latin America. Always seeking knowledge, Joyce felt she learned as much from her students as they from her. Along with classroom instruction, Joyce provided individual tutoring to students to enhance their English writing and speaking skills. She loved teaching and learning from her students, which she did for many years until her MS prevented her from physically continuing. Travel was another aspect of learning-and enjoyment for Joyce-which took her to Alaska, Florida (teaching dolphins!), Canada, Africa, Scotland and Ireland. She captured the beauty of every country she visited in stunning photos. Joyce's healthy head of beautiful and natural red hair was the envy of many people she met throughout her life. Joyce is survived by her sister Marcia Kellogg, brother-in-law Max Kellogg, niece Michele Cottingham and her husband Jeff Cottingham. Along with her biological family, Joyce will be missed by close friends, the Oddo family (Tom, Lucia, Joe & Arley) the Stephenson family (Jan, Alyssa and Benjamin), Terri Rizzo; John Bombella, and too many others to mention!! Joyce will be interred in Iowa, next to her Mom and Dad. Memorial contributions in her name can be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
