Josephine Hartzell, 101, of Grinnell died Monday, August 23, 2004, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A graveside service and burial for Ms. Hartzell will be held 9:30 a.m. Friday, August 27, 2004, at Hazelwood Cemetery with the Rev. Dan Ogata, retired, officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grinnell Senior Center. Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell is handling arrangements. The daughter of Marion Calvin and Ida Florence Perry Hartzell, she was born November 29, 1902, in Grinnell. She was raised on a farm near Grinnell and received her education in the Grinnell School District and then attended secretarial school in Marshalltown. She was employed as a typist for a business in Nevada and also wrote and sold articles to several magazines and newspapers. She later returned to Grinnell where she cared for her parents on the family farm. She had been a resident of St. Francis Manor since 2002. She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and was active with the Grinnell Senior Center, RSVP Kitchen Band and MAC Choir. Survivors include one sister, Alice Sleeth Milwaukee; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Ray Hartzell; and one sister, Estella Hartzell.
