John was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on November 18, 1928, the son of Samuel H. and Florence Smith Sadler. He was raised in Nashville and attended school there. He later served with the Tennessee Army National Guard for six months.
John moved to Grinnell in 1946 where he met his wife, Bev Lacy, while working at the Grinnell Shoe Factory. They were united in marriage on August 8, 1948, in Franklin, Kentucky. Bev and John were happily married until her death on May 25, 2011. Together they enjoyed 64 years of marriage sharing a simple life.
John was employed at the Grinnell Shoe Factory, One Minute Washing Machine Factory in Kellogg, and then for 30 years at Maytag Company in Newton, as a press operator in Plant #1 and #2. He retired in 1979.
John and Bev enjoyed their time with each other and the company of their two dogs, Benji and Sweetie. The spent all their free time together and were able to travel a little. One special trip was to Bath, Maine where Bev introduced John to deep sea fishing, only to discover he didn't have very good "sea legs!" They also took the occasional jaunt to Davenport and Mesquaki where they had fun playing the nickel machines. John also made sure Bev got her nightly drive through the countryside, which pleased her greatly.
John enjoyed fishing and hunting, and the occasional skiing trips with his brother-in-law. He could be seen riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle with its gear shift on the side. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
John is survived by one brother Edgar Sadler of Nolensville, Tennessee and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bev in 2011; and eight siblings. Bill Booker, Robert, Sam, Paul, Edward, and Franklin Sadler, Pauline Rayburn, and Christine Coleman.
