Obituary

John Matthew Johnson passed away on April 3, 2022 at the age of 40. His battle with serious medical issues in recent years showed his courage in facing life's challenges and for living out his days to the fullest. John was born on November 4, 1981 in San Antonio, TX to Pam and Doug Johnson. He moved with his mom and siblings to Grinnell where he lived his days skateboarding and playing soccer. He was a 2000 graduate of Grinnell High School and went on to attend Coe College. During his time at Coe College John was very active on campus. He participated in intramural basketball and soccer, winning the soccer championship three years in a row. John was the president of his fraternity Lambda Chi Alpha for a year and was influential in shaping and growing the chapter. He made countless lifelong friends/brothers during his time there. After Coe, John went on to receive his master's degree from the University of Wisconsin and was employed with Jabil Manufacturing, working with purchasing and human resources. Despite his time in WI, John was a Hawkeye fan through and through. He enjoyed traveling, cooking, trying new cuisine, playing pool, the Browns, and spending time with his family and friends. John is survived and lovingly remembered by his mom Pam Johnson (Tim Clark) of Grinnell, dad Doug Johnson of Des Moines; sister Sarah Lewis of Atkins; brother Tim Johnson of Minneapolis; three nephews Collin, Micah and Wyatt, and one niece Hannah. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Loine "Nana" Richardt, Richard Haire, John and Nadine Runyan, and Gordon Johnson; uncles Mark and Bryce Johnson; aunt Connie Derry; and cousins Sean Haire and Ava Hutchinson. While he leaves a huge hole in the hearts of his family and friends, John has left many meaningful and happy memories for those who knew and loved him that will last their lifetimes. He truly brought the life to the party. His friends and family will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest. Because John celebrated life, no formal funeral service is being planned, instead, he will be honored with a Celebration of Life to be held this summer, giving John's friends from across the country a chance to attend. A celebration of life gathering will be held on July 16, 2022 from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Elks Lodge, 720 Third Avenue, Grinnell, IA 50112. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's honor can be made to the John M Johnson Memorial Fund mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with his family online at www.smithfh.com
