John was born at home on the family farm in Iowa County on December 20, 1927, to Louis and Rachel (Saelens) DeRycke. He grew up working hard on the farm and attended country school before graduating from Hartwick High School. John proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War, stationed in Germany as part of the 2nd Armored Division.
On February 27, 1965, John married Grace Gearhart at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. They made their home on a farm near Victor, where they raised their family. A dedicated and hardworking farmer, John raised corn, soybeans, cattle, and hogs. He was a talented mechanic who maintained his own equipment and was known for his resourcefulness and perseverance.
John was a faithful member of St. Bridget Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Victor American Legion. He was a devoted husband and father who loved spending time with his family. Together, they enjoyed memorable vacations to places like Yellowstone National Park, the World's Fairs in Vancouver and Knoxville, and even European tours. John made friends wherever he went, thanks to his friendly demeanor, sharp wit, and knack for storytelling. He had a sweet tooth, particularly for ice cream, and enjoyed visiting casinos to play the slots.
John is lovingly remembered by his children, Sharon (Bryan) Lenz of Bettendorf, IA, and Mike (Mary) DeRycke of Victor; his grandchildren, Austin (Bridget) Lenz, Kennedy Lenz, Andrew Longfellow, and Greg Longfellow; and great-grandchildren, Cross, Brady, and Cami Lenz. He is also survived by his brother, Don DeRycke of Victor. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Grace DeRycke.
If desired memorial contributions may be designated to John's Family for future designation to local organizations. Memorials may be mailed in care of Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 485, Victor, IA 52347.
