Jo McNurlen,65, of Grinnell, died on Saturday, April 6, 2013, at her home.
A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. Keith Morrison, chaplain of Grinnell Regional Hospice, officiating. Casket Bearers will be Bryan Fank, Andrew Walter, Jacob Schmitz, Ryan Gersdorf, Brad Nelson, Russ Landuyt, Dave Crawford and Brian Oliver. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.
Friends may call at the funeral home beginning 12:00 noon on Tuesday and the family will be present at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
Memorials may be directed to the Jo McNurlen Memorial Fund.
Jo was born on June 29, 1947, in Grinnell, Iowa to Myles and Beulah Slaven Olson. She was raised in Grinnell and attended Grinnell schools.
On December 3, 1963, she was united in marriage to Dennis McNurlen in Montezuma. The couple lived in Grinnell and were married for 49 years. She was a homemaker and mother of six children as well as an employee of Friendship Manor, the Mayflower Community and the Eagles Club. For the past 20 years she was employed at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
Jo was a member of the Grinnell Eagles Club Auxiliary and the Red Hat Lady Bug Society. She enjoyed collecting angels, traveling to see grottos, needle work and spending time with her family. She loved making paper dolls and then playing with these dolls with her sisters and grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Dennis McNurlen of Grinnell, IA; four daughters, Kelli (Tom) Walter of Grinnell, IA, Terri(Norm) Bogunia of Kettering, Ohio, Bobbi McNurlen of Cedar Rapids, IA and Billi Keller of Marshalltown, IA; two sons, James (Kimberly) McNurlen and Jeff McNurlen, both of Grinnell, IA; six grandchildren, Tobbie Walter of Chicago, IL, Jessica Walter of Ankeny, IA, Andrew Walter of Grinnell, IA, Bryan (Carrie) Fank of Littleton, Colorado, Jacob Schmitz and Alyssa Schmitz, both of Cedar Rapids, IA ; one great granddaughter, Michelle Burkett of Chicago, IL; and three sisters, Kay Jack of Ankeny, IA, Joyce (Ron) Bryan of Oskaloosa, IA and Judy (Gary) Jones of Pensacola, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one granddaughter, Allison Jo Schmitz.
