Obituary

Jim Collum, 78, of Grinnell, died on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, May 20, 2022, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Brooklyn. Interment with military honors will be at Calvary Cemetery in Brooklyn. A luncheon will follow at the Michael J. Manatt Center in Brooklyn. A rosary will be held at 3:30 pm on Thursday, May 19th at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. The family will receive friends at the visitation held from 4:00 pm until 7 pm on Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home. Memorials may be designated to the Jim Collum Memorial Fund to benefit local organizations and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with his family online at www.smithfh.com. James Patrick Collum was born the son of Joseph and Mary (Snook) Collum on February 28, 1944 in Grinnell, Iowa. He was raised in Brooklyn and graduated from BGM High School in Brooklyn with the class of 1962. He honorably served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War period. He graduated from the Universal Trade School in Omaha, Nebraska. On January 15, 1966, Jim was united in marriage to Patricia "Pat" Monroe at St. Mary Catholic Church in Grinnell. Their marriage was blessed with two sons, Jeff and Chad, and a daughter, Debra. They raised their family in Grinnell and Jim was employed at Parish and Cram Refrigeration; later purchasing the business. In 2004, Jim sustained a spinal cord injury and was forced into early retirement. Jim was a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Grinnell, where he served with the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Club in Grinnell. His enjoyments were attending his grandchildren's activities, hunting, fishing, watching NASCAR races, attending Iowa football and basketball games, and socializing with friends and strangers alike. He will be remembered for his kindness, for having a heart of gold, and for being unconditionally accepting of others. Jim is survived by his children, Jeff (Kris) Collum of West Des Moines, IA and their children, Layne and Ryleigh, Debbie Collum-Calderwood of Brooklyn, IA and her children, Morgan Collum and Christian Calderwood, and Chad (Mendy) Collum of Urbandale, IA and their children, Kayla and Claire; his siblings, Mary Ann Plants of Brooklyn, Joyce (George) Watson of Marengo, IA, Robert (Marilyn) Collum of Brooklyn, and David (Mary Jo) Collum of Brooklyn; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Joseph Collum, Jr., Delores Lacaeyse, Patricia Brau, Tom Collum, and John Paul Collum, who died in infancy.
