Jewel W. Kintzinger, 84, of Grinnell died peacefully on November 29, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 15th, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 Friday evening. A private family burial will be held on Saturday, December 16th, at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Funeral services are scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Saturday, December 16th, at the United Church of Christ-Congregational in Grinnell with Rev. Cameron Barr officiating. Organist will be Ken Davis accompanied by vocalists Andy and Sarah Hamilton. Honorary bearers will be Doug, Stuart, Jackson, Kendal, Barrett Kintzinger, Nathan, Lincoln and Ethan Harpham, Grant Lenz, David Ditzler, Galyn Goldman, and David Vanderlinden. A Celebration of Life/ "Santa Party" will be held from 6:00 until 9:00 Saturday evening, December 16th, at Jewel's lovely home in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell-Newburg Dollars for Scholars/John and Jewel Kintzinger Scholarship Fund, the Mayflower Community, or St. Francis Manor. Our "Precious Jewel" was born on March 24, 1933, in Dubuque, the daughter of Lester George and Evelyn Mary Lantzky Wendt. She was raised in Dubuque, a place filled with many great childhood memories including going to the family farm with her parents and brother every weekend. While growing up, she enjoyed playing golf, tennis and other sports including basketball and volleyball. She loved to camp, dance, and do acrobates. She attended kindergarten thru the 12th grade in Dubuque and graduated in 1951 from Dubuque Senior High in the top 25 of her class. She received a B.S. degree in Child Development at Iowa State University in June of 1955. During her college years, Jewel was an active member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and the Lutheran Student Center. She later received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree from the University of Dubuque in May of 1998. After college, Jewel went to work for the Girl Scouts of America in Racine, Wisconsin as a Field and Waterfront Director. She then went on to work at the YWCA of Dubuque as a Teen Age Program Director. On April 3, 1965, she was united in marriage with John W. Kinzinger, in Dubuque, and they honeymooned in Chicago. The couple lived in Tacoma, Washington; Mt. Vernon, Ohio and moved to Grinnell in 1969 where John managed the window division of Wenco/Jeld-Wen of Iowa plant. They wintered in North Redington Beach, Florida for many years. Jewel lost John to heaven on August 6, 2001 and married Burtwin L. Day on April 29, 2005, in Grinnell. Burt and Jewel enjoyed traveling to visit many friends and family from coast to coast. Burt passed away August 5, 2015. Jewel was very active in volunteer work with many civic organizations and had served on numerous boards. She was a Campfire and Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout leader, past president of the Grinnell-Newburg PTA, past president and a 50+ member of PEO, and a member of Priscilla Club and Levart Club. She served on the Grinnell United Way Board; Mayflower Community Foundation Board, where she co-chaired one of their major fundraisers and co-chaired a Grinnell College Town & Gown fundraiser. She was appointed to the IHELA (Iowa Higher Education Loan Authority) Board by Governor Terry Branstad and served from 1986 to 2004. She was a member of the Grinnell United Church of Christ-Congregational, where she was active with the Christian Education Board, Board of Trustees, Diaconate Committee and was a Sunday school teacher. She was also very active with Grinnell Regional Medical Center having served on the Art Advisory Board, the Auxiliary Board, chair of the hospital gift shop and was a fundraising campaign co-chairperson. Since 1982, she served on the University of Dubuque Board of Trustees. Jewel was a philanthropist and benefactor of many institutions and organizations. She was a proud supporter of higher education at many institutions including Grinnell, Luther, Dubuque, and Arizona State University. She enjoyed golf, traveling, having fun with family and friends, and acts of kindness for others. Jewel was a loving mother, wife, daughter, grandmother, sister, cousin, and friend. She is survived by her children, Doug (Shelly) Kintzinger of Lake Oswego, Oregon; Stuart (Shannon) Kintzinger of Charlotte, North Carolina; Rachel (Tom) Harpham of Redding, California; and Wendy Lentz of Paradise Valley, Arizona; and nine grandchildren, Jackson and Kendal Kintzinger of Lake Oswego; Hannah and Barrett Kintzinger of Charlotte; Lincoln and Ethan Harpham of Redding and Nathan (Kelsey) Harpham from Bend, Oregon; and Grant and Sidney Lentz of Paradise Valley. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, John Kintzinger and Burt Day; brother, Richard L. Wendt; and a step-grandson, Noah Harpham. Jewel believed in Santa Claus and the spirit of giving back her entire life. Her collection of Santa's has grown to over 500 and she even married one in Burtwin. We will not be able to see a Santa without thinking of our "Precious Jewel."
