Jessica Lorraine Zucker, 101, peacefully passed away on April 26, 2021, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell, Iowa. A graveside service and burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, September 18th, at Stavanger Friends Cemetery, north of Ladora. A celebration of life service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Grinnell. A reception will be held at Seeland Park Social Center after the celebration of life service. Jessica was born on March 4, 1920, in Gilman, Iowa, to Jess & Ruth (Somme) Strand. She was raised on their farm and graduated from Gilman High School. In 1941 Jessica, known to family as Lorraine, married Robert Sawyer. A son, Michael Wayne Sawyer, was born to this union. In 1951, Jessica married Eugene Zucker, a member of the United States Air Force. They had 2 sons, Kevin Zucker and Dana Zucker. When Gene retired in 1965, they settled in Sacramento, California. Jessica remained there after Gene's passing in 2008 until 2012 when she moved to Iowa to be near her oldest son and family. Jessica was an avid reader, a great writer, and also took several writing classes at the local university in Sacramento. Her favorite love was playing duplicate bridge for which she received her Life Master designation. She continued to play with her son until she was 98 years old. In addition to her 3 sons, Michael Sawyer (Kathi), Kevin Zucker and Dana Zucker, she is survived by 4 grandchildren, Genessa Zucker, Jarred Zucker, Joseph Sawyer (Leslie), and Ian Sawyer (Heather). There are also 8 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Jessica was the last of her generation and was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, 17 uncles and aunts as well as "dozens of cousins." She will be remembered by her family for her quick wit and sense of humor. Condolences may be sent to Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, IA. Jessica will be missed by all.
