Jerry Barns, 70, of Grinnell, died on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
A private family service with military honors will be held at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell with Pastor Scott Surovec officiating.

Jerry Lee Barns was born the son of David Keller Barns and Margaret Ann (Milligan) Barns on August 8, 1951, in Grinnell, Iowa. He was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1969. He honorably served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War period.
Jerry was united in marriage to Linda Jean Gerard on January 1, 1972, at the First Baptist Church in Grinnell. Their marriage was blessed with a son, Dave and a daughter, Julie. They resided in Grinnell and Jerry was a longtime fireman and later served as Fire Chief at the Grinnell Fire Department. He had also worked at Hiland and drove for Schwann's food service. His enjoyments were reading, golfing, genealogy, white water rafting, and enjoying the companionship of his cats. He will be remembered for his intelligence and zest for learning, for being meticulous, and for the love of his family.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Linda Barns of Grinnell; son, Dave (Monica) Barns of Grinnell; daughter, Julie (Rod Matthews) Barns of Rome, Georgia; his brothers, Skip (Mary Kate) Barns of Hannibal, Missouri, and Jim (Sheri) Barns of Bella Vista, Arkansas; and sister-in-law, Lavon Roush of Kansas City. He was preceded in death by his parents.
