Jeremiah "Jay" Spear, 38, of Belle Plaine, died peacefully on April 16, 2018. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Grinnell Eagles on May 4th from 5-10pm to pay tribute to the relationships and memories that brought Jay the greatest joy. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jeremiah R. Spear Memorial Fund that will be directed into an education fund for Jay's son, Mason Spear. Jay was born on November 2, 1979 to Rhonda (Powers) Spear and Richard "Dick" Spear in Manchester, Iowa. He received most of his education in the Grinnell School District and attended Des Moines Area Community College. Jay lived in Belle Plaine for nearly 15 years and was employed as an equipment operator for Grow Alliance and later with Pierce Lumber. From birth Jay was an energetic, adventurous soul and made lasting impressions on those he encountered, wherever he went. He was unforgettable! Jay was hilarious, passionate, and compassionate. He had an unrelenting commitment to his relationships. He gave help far easier than he received help. Jay loved the outdoors, fishing at local farm ponds, and attending truck-pull events. He loved music, movies, and hanging out with his friends. He had countless friends! The single most important person in his life was his son, Mason. He loved him dearly and was deeply proud of being his father. Survivors include his mother, Rhonda Spear of Grinnell, and father, Dick Spear of Casey. He is also survived by his step-father, Dirk Gersdorf of Grinnell; partner for most of his life, Ashley Ehlen and their son, Mason Spear of Belle Plaine; three siblings, Shane Vest of Story City, Stephanie (Spear) and Joe Filigno of Cincinnati, Ohio and Bailey Gersdorf and Cody Wells of LaBelle, Florida; a niece and nephew, Keegan and Kennedy White of Belle Plaine; a nephew, Giuseppe Filigno of Cincinnati; two nieces, Jocelyn Vest of Ames and Madison Vest of Story City; his grandfather, Roger Powers of Gaffney, South Carolina; grandmother, Dorothy Gersdorf of Grinnell; his god-parents, Gary and Ramona Zimmerman; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Betty (Reinig) Powers and grandfather, Don Gersdorf. May Jay's soul rest in everlasting peace.
