Jean was the daughter of William and Mae Wilson Moore and was born on July 10, 1922, in Morgantown, West Virginia. She was raised in Morgantown and graduated from Morgantown High School with the Class of 1943. She received a BA degree from West Virginia University in 1943, and she worked as a librarian for the West Virginia Geological Survey for five years. In 1949, she received a Masters degree from Peabody College in Nashville, TN. Following her graduation in 1949, she moved to Grinnell, Iowa and worked as a reference librarian at Grinnell College.
On August 25, 1951, she was married to Bernard Schmitz in Grinnell, Iowa. The couple made their home in Grinnell and she worked for many years at Kramer's Jewelry Store and later for Hammen's Jewelry Store.
She was actively involved in St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Grinnell Camp Fire Girl's Assn., the Altar and Rosary Society of her church. She also volunteered at Grinnell Regional Medical Center and the Second Mile.
Survivors include her two sons, Mark Schmitz of Somerset, N.J. and David Schmitz of Grinnell; two daughters, Carol Ireland of Des Moines and Leann Schmitz of Denver, Colorado; and one brother, Steven Moore of Jacksonville, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
