Obituary

Janyce Lucile Heishman, 97, of Grinnell, died on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

Visitation will begin at 12:00 PM, Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and Janyce's family will receive family and friends from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, December 28, 2023, at the Grinnell United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Sheridan Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the interment at Oakland Acres west of Grinnell.

Memorial contributions may be designated to St. Francis Manor Foundation, Sheridan United Methodist Church or Grinnell United Methodist Church, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home and Crematory, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA. 50112.

Janyce Lucile Heishman was born in Grinnell, Iowa on April 25,1926, the daughter of Wilbur Henry Schultz and Elva Lucile Graham. She was raised in the Sheridan Community and attended grade school at Sheridan #8 and graduated from the Grinnell High School in 1943.

After high school Janyce attended the Midland Airline School in Kansas City, Missouri and worked for TWA airlines in Dayton, Ohio for 2 years.

Janyce was united in marriage to Floyd Lester Heishman on November 16, 1946 at the Sheridan United Methodist Church after he was honorably discharged from the United States Army having served in the Philippines. Janyce was preceded in death by her husband Floyd on November 6, 2018. They had been married 72 years at the time of his passing. Janyce and Floyd farmed in the Sheridan community until January 1994 when they moved to Grinnell.

Janyce was confirmed at the Sheridan United Methodist Church. She was an 82-year member of the Methodist Church, with memberships at Sheridan United Methodist Church, Tama United Methodist Church, and Grinnell United Methodist Church.

Janyce was active in church activities, was a member of Grinnell UMW, was a charter member of the Rainbow Girls at Grinnell, was a 4-H leader, member of the Order of Eastern Star - Holly Chapter, Malcom, Tama American Legion Auxiliary, Grinnell PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization) and was a volunteer at the Grinnell Hospital.

Janyce and Floyd enjoyed attending the Iowa State Fair every year and traveling. Their lifelong traveling adventures included fishing trips to Canada, trips to Colorado, Wyoming, Florida, Arizona, California, Georgia, Tennessee, Yellowstone, Black Hills, Hawaii, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama Canal, Bahamas, Northeastern States, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Alaska, and Washington (D.C. & state). Janyce and Floyd were avid University of Iowa Hawkeye fans attending football and basketball games.

Janyce is survived by a daughter Susan (David) Heise, son Larry, and daughter, Shirley (Dean) Laraway; six grandchildren: Andy (Sarah) Heishman, Jim (fiancé Kate) Heishman, Becky (Chad) Blackert, Laura (Al) Diamond, Chad (Chrissy) Heise, Megan (Kelton) Reinart, eight great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Linda (Bob) Overturf. She is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Floyd.
