Janet Ruth
Mutti
July 13, 1946 – August 14, 2025
Janet Mutti, of Grinnell, IA died on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at Mayflower Healthcare Center in Grinnell.
Jan grew up in Ridgewood, NJ. She took piano lessons from age seven through college and enjoyed singing in choral groups - two interests she pursued throughout her life. She spent many hours as a candy striper and desk clerk in her local hospital growing up.
Jan attended Earlham College, where she majored in Elementary Education and met her future husband, Jack. They proposed to each other in a tree. Jan taught in Ramsey, NJ and then in Spring Green, WI after moving to Madison to marry Jack.
Jan and Jack then moved to Laramie, WY and had three sons - Jamie, Michael, and Glenn. At that time, Jan became a stay-at-home mom. Although she was not brought up camping or canoeing, she was a very good sport in adding those family activities to her other hobbies. Jack often worked in Washington, DC which allowed the family to frequently visit Jan's sister who lived nearby. Jan accompanied a children's choir in Gaithersburg, MD, and she was inspired to start one in Laramie.
Upon moving to Grinnell, Jan volunteered in many roles at the United Methodist church and two ecumenical spiritual weekends, Marriage Encounter and the Walk to Emmaus. She led a bell choir, and she trained as a Stephen Minister. She regularly visited and supported other members of the congregation. She completed Ragbrai the first year she arrived in Grinnell, and she always enjoyed spending time outdoors.
More recently, she enjoyed frequent travels to visit her sons, spouses, and six grandsons in Colorado Springs, Seattle, and Indiana.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 30, 2025, at Grinnell United Methodist Church with a luncheon to follow in the Friendship Center of the Church. Family will greet friends at a visitation held from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Friday, August 29 at Smith Funeral Home – Grinnell.
Memorial gifts can be made to the Mayflower Human Needs Fund, the Grinnell United Methodist Church, and the Grinnell Historical Society.
