Obituary

Jane Ellen Sorensen, 87 of Grinnell, and formerly of Holiday Lake near Brooklyn, died on January 10, 2021, at St. Francis Manor. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date. Her body was deeded to the University of Iowa Anatomy Department in Iowa City. Memorials may be designated to the family of Jane Sorensen in c/o Smith Funeral Home, 1103 Broad Street, Grinnell, Iowa 50112 Jane was born on July 31, 1933, in Norfolk, Nebraska, the daughter of Edward Steven and Nina Viola Peterson Hassman, Sr. As a child she lived in Bloomfield, Nebraska and Galva, Iowa. She was a graduate of Galva High School. On January 12, 1952, she was united in marriage to Eldon Raymond Sorensen, in Galva. The couple later moved to Newton in 1966 and then to Holiday Lake in December of 1972. In 1966, Jane began her career working at the Maytag Company in Newton. She retired from there in 1991, after 25 years. She knew the value of hard work! Jane was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the American Legion Auxiliary. She attended the United Methodist Church in Brooklyn. Jane enjoyed and held a passion for arts & crafts, she was very talented and well-rounded in everything she did. Her travels took her as far as Alaska and the Panama Canal and she was a part of several bus tours to eastern America. She loved the outdoors and flower gardening. She enjoyed her retirement! Survivors include her three children, Kent (Kristi) Sorensen of Holiday Lake, Sue (Dari) Clarke of Newton, and Gordon (Billie) Sorensen of Denver, Missouri; three siblings, Joan Grimes of Galva, Edward (Wanda) Hassman, Jr. of Huntsville, Texas, and Judy Tharp of Williamsburg; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2003; and a brother, Jerry Hassman.
