Jack Smothers, 62, of Lake Ponderosa, died February 19, 2010, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 24, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. George Salnave, pastor of the Montezuma First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Pallbearers will be Camiel Landuyt, Eric Bailey, Dennis Bates, Tony Hall, Roger Hopwood, Nate Benesh, Brian York, and Mark Guthrie. Honorary bearers will be Doug Hammelman, Brent McKenna, Carl Merical, Jim Collum, Steve Penning, and Jess Reams. Military Rites will be conducted by the Grinnell American Legion. Burial will be in Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home and where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Jack Smothers Memorial Fund. Jack was born October 1, 1947, on the family farm near Ewart, the son of Louis and Esther Sammon Smothers. He was raised in the Poweshiek and Jasper Counties area and was a 1965 graduate of Newton High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army during the Viet Nam War. On August 21, 1970, he was united in marriage to Patricia Olson, in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple lived in Newton for several years where he was employed with Maytag. In 1978, they moved to Grinnell and then in 2002, the couple moved to their current home at Lake Ponderosa. Since 1976 he had been employed with the Donaldson Company in Grinnell. He was a member of the Lake Ponderosa Association, Grinnell Eagles Club and the Grinnell American Legion where he was a past commander. While at Maytag he was a member of UAW Local 997 and he currently was a member of UAW Local 1201 serving as Union Financial Secretary since 1977. Survivors include his wife, Patricia of Lake Ponderosa; three sons, Troy Hess of Montezuma, Tony Hess of Des Moines, and Patrick (Olicia) Smothers of Lake Ponderosa; two grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Trent; and six brothers, Jim of Montezuma, Bud of Grinnell, Raymond of Colfax, Bill of Marshalltown, Fred of Newton and Ed of Newton. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Todd Hess in 1990.
