Obituary

Irene E. Schmitt, 90, of Grinnell, died July 2, 2008, at the Mayflower Homes Health Care Center in Grinnell. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 14, 2008, at the Mayflower Homes Carman Center with Rev. Jim Trosen, retired, of Muscatine, officiating. Pianist will be Jeanette Tisdale and vocalist will be Ed Poush. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Mayflower Homes. The daughter of Leo Carl and Elsie Helene Berger Baumann, she was born August 30, 1917, on a farm near Highland, Illinois. She attended rural school near her home and was a 1935 graduate of Highland High School. She later was a 1940 graduate of Washington University School of Nursing in St. Louis. After her gradation she was a nurse at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. On June 6, 1944, she was married to Myron Schmitt, in Highland, Illinois. The couple lived in Lenzburg, Illinois prior to moving to Kankakee, Illinois. While there she taught classes to LPN's at Kankakee Community College for several years. The couple then moved to Elgin, Illinois and she was employed at Sherman Hospital for 18 years. She retired in 1987. In 1989, they moved to the Mayflower Homes in Grinnell. Irene was a loving wife and mother and was devoted to raising her family prior to her commitment to her nursing career. She enjoyed knitting, reading, and listening to classical music. She was a gracious and very giving person. Survivors include three children, Mary Jo (and Ernst)Jolas of Mokena, Illinois, Kathryn Ann (and James) Trosen of Muscatine, and Mark (and Chris)Schmitt of Crystal Lake, Illinois; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and three brothers, Harold, Glenn, and Robert Baumann.
