Irene E. Rohrssen, 99, of Grinnell and formerly of Sumner, died on August 17, 2022, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.
A graveside service and burial has been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 22, at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Sumner.

Irene was born on October 13, 1922, in rural Sumner, the daughter of Edward and Alvina Meier Waschkat. She was baptized October 29, 1922, at St. Paul's Evangelical Church and later confirmed in August of 1938, at the rural Stapleton Lutheran Church. She attended rural schools near her home in Fayette County.
On November 11, 1942, she was united in marriage with Earl W. Rohrssen, at the Little Brown Church, in Nashua. The couple farmed near Sumner for 25 years prior to moving to Sumner. She drove a school bus for the Sumner School District for nearly 20 years and retired in 1979. The couple retired to Seeland Park in Grinnell in 1995. They also wintered in Mesa, Arizona for 10 years.
Irene was a member of St. John's American Lutheran Church in Sumner for 60 years where she was active in the Ladies Circle, Bible studies, and driving Lutheran League kids to various events, including to Texas and New York. While living in Grinnell she was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
Irene enjoyed sports, her many fishing trips to Minnesota and Canada, and traveling throughout the United States, Canada, and abroad, including trips to Europe, Egypt, and Israel. She and Earl held a passion for seeing the world!
Survivors include her son, Larry (Evelyn) Rohrssen of Waverly; two grandchildren, Kristin Kuiper of Waverly and Thomas Rohrssen of Hastings, Minnesota; one great-granddaughter, Maria Kuiper of Cedar Falls; and one sister, Adella (Clarence) Strempke of Sumner. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl in 2008; and two sisters, Helen Hyman and Evelyn Kirchkoff.
