Hye C. Vanderveer, 79, of Grinnell, IA passed away on March 13, 2023 at UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, Saturday, March 25, 2023, at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.

Memorials may be designated to either the UnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical Center Foundation or the Grinnell American Legion in c/o of Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112.

Hye was born on January 19, 1944, in South Korea. She was raised on a farm and graduated from high school in South Korea. Hye met James Vanderveer while he was stationed in South Korea during the Vietnam war and was united in marriage to James on June 10, 1970. The couple had two children together, James L., and John C.

Hye was an accomplished seamstress at DeLong Sportswear from the early 1970s until her retirement in 2009.

Hye enjoyed tending to her garden and doing yardwork. She grew vegetables and flowers, and loved seeing the hummingbirds in her garden. She also loved to prepare special meals for her family. Hye was known for her sewing, especially for family, such as making jackets for her sons, blankets, and clothing for her son's god daughter. For almost 40 years, Hye would lovingly patch up her husband James' jeans from all the holes he would get from his welding job at Donaldson.

Hye was forever dedicated to her husband and sons, and they knew how much she loved them.

She is survived by her sons, James Vanderveer of Grinnell, and John (Jennifer) Vanderveer of Urbandale, IA.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James.
