Obituary

Howard L. Badger, 93, of Fort Dodge, died on Thursday, February 12, 2015, at Bickford Cottages in Fort Dodge. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 17, 2015, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Barbara Stumbo officiating. Music will be provided by William Tinker, pianist and Angela Viebrock, vocalist. Interment will be at the Ivy Hill Cemetery near Malcom at a later date. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning 3:00 p.m. on Monday and the family will be present at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Should friends desire, memorials may be directed to Alzheimer's Research and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112. Howard was born on November 28, 1921, in Coatsville, Missouri to Harold and Bertha Johnson Badger. He was raised in Tama, Iowa and attended public schools. Following his education he served with the Army Air Corp during World War II in Italy. On June 4, 1945, he was united in marriage to Edna Baltisberger in Montezuma. The couple farmed near Malcom and later moved to a farm near Des Moines. From 1964 to 1969, he managed the FELCO research farm in Fort Dodge. The family moved to Roland and he worked in sales for the Roland Elevator until his retirement in 1984. Following their retirement, the couple lived on their farm near Malcom, where they loved to display outdoor Christmas lights. In 2010, they moved to Badger and later to Bickford Cottages in Fort Dodge. Howard enjoyed gardening, camping and wintering in Texas. As a veteran of World War II he especially enjoyed the "Honor Trip" to Washington D.C. to view various war memorials. Survivors include his wife, Edna Badger of Fort Dodge; one daughter, Irlene (Jon) Larson of Badger, IA; two sons, Irvy (Jeanneen) Badger of Moorland, IA and Scott (Beth) Badger of Exira, IA; eight grandchildren, Amy (Willy) Sorenson, Angela (Johnny) Viebrock, Christy (Justin) Krogman, Jeremy (Tina) Larson, Travis Badger, Casey Badger, Justin (Chelsie) Badger and Rikki Badger; nine great grandchildren, Alex, Kennedy, and Carter Sorenson, Larson and Lincoln Viebrock, Olivia Krogman, Tielyr Clabaugh, Ava Larson and Addison Badger; and one sister, Genevieve Bloudek of Manchester, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Cleta Hagge; and four brothers, Ernie, Jack, Bill and Joe Badger.
