Horace B. Hegg died on Thursday, April 13, 2017, and Gretchen T. Hegg died on Thursday, April 20, 2017, both were residents at the Mayflower Health Care Center in Grinnell. Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 13, 2017 St. Timothy Lutheran Church -- Hudson. Horace donated his body to the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Visitation: will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2017 at the Locke Funeral Home in Waterloo, Iowa. Burial will be in Hudson Cemetery in Hudson, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Hudson. Horace was born on February 1, 1929, in Decorah, Iowa to Dr. Lester and Palma Erickson Hegg. The family moved to Rock Valley, Iowa, where he was raised and graduated from Rock Valley High School with the Class of 1946. In 1950, he graduated from Grinnell College and from 1951 to 1953, he served with the United States Marine Corps. Following his military service, he moved to Hudson, Iowa and taught science at the Hudson High School. Gretchen was born on June 26, 1929 in Leland, Iowa to Gilbert and Clara (Charlson) Thompson. She graduated from Forest City High School in 1945. Gretchen graduated from Waldorf College in 1947 and taught elementary school in Garner, Marshalltown, and Humboldt Horace and Gretchen met at the University of Iowa in the summer of 1954 and on June 4, 1955, they were married at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Leland, Iowa. To this union was born four children, Philip, Sara, Erika and Christian. Horace dedicated his life to the education and coaching of children, working in the Waterloo School District and later as a consultant for AEA Seven. He retired and lived in Hudson until moving to Grinnell in 2014. Gretchen managed the home and later was a teacher associate in the Hudson Schools. Together they lived in Hudson until moving to the Grinnell Mayflower Health Center in 2014. They were both active members of the St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Hudson. Gretchen in the Women's Group (WELCA) and Horace in the designing and construction of the cross in the sanctuary of the church. They were both members of the Retired Teachers Association of Black Hawk County (Horace was past president). Horace was a former chairman of the city of Hudson Library building committee, past president of the Waterloo Senior Men's Golf League and a member of the board of directors of the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, which later became NewAldaya Lifescapes. Horace wrote a children's book "The Skier and Other Stories" and his memoirs, "Brinyald's Journey". Together, they are survived by their four children: Philip (Kimberly) Hegg of Brooklyn, Iowa, Sara (Jim) Hegg-Dunne of Grinnell, Erika (Jack) Arendt of Coralville, Iowa, and Christian Hegg of Orland Park, Illinois; ten grandchildren, Zachary, Vincent, Sierra, Nicole, Katelin, Eli, Philip, Prescott, Caroline and Catherine; five great-grandchildren, Sophie, Kaden, Brody, Hudson and Hayden. Horace's brother, Peer (Pat) Hegg of Hacienda Heights, California. Gretchen's two brothers: Herbert Thompson of Moline, Illinois, and David (Sue) Thompson of Irvine, CA., and one sister: Marcia Turcotte, of Minneapolis, MN. Horace was preceded in death by his parents. Gretchen was preceded in death by her parents; four sister, Alice Tett, Winnifred Thompson, Catherine Jorgensen, Margaret Schwidder, and one brother Gerald Thompson.
