Helen R. Johnson, 95, of Grinnell died on March 19, 2020, at her home, St. Francis Manor Ten Plex, in Grinnell. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be designated to the family of Helen Arnold. Helen was born on June 9, 1924 to James T. and Grace (Halterman) Simpson at 614 spring St. in Grinnell, Iowa. She attended Davis School and Graduated from Grinnell High School in 1942. Helen was employed by Grinnell Telephone Company from 1944 until September 1, 1950, when she began her career with Lennox Industries Inc. in Marshalltown, Iowa. On November 20, 1962 Helen was united in marriage to Sgt. Thomas Arnold, whom she met when he was transferred by the Army, Ft. Riley, Kansas to Grinnell to be a military advisor to the Army Reserves in Grinnell, Oskaloosa and Marshalltown. They lived in Marshalltown after they wed until 1964 when Tom was transferred to Germany, nine months prior to his planned military retirement. After Tom retired, they lived at 407 New Salem road, Marshalltown, Iowa until 1978 when Lennox Industries Inc. moved their corporate headquarters to Dallas, Texas. At this time, they both transferred to the Dallas area living in Plano, Texas. Helen retired from Lennox Industries Inc on February 1, 1991 as a Corporate Senior Traffic Analyst – Export after 40 years of employment. Helen was a lifetime member of the Lennox Management Club and a member of the Southern Oaks Baptist Church in Tyler, Texas where they lived from February, 1991 until May 1, 2014, when they moved back to Grinnell, where it all started, to make their home at the Seeland Park Apartments. Sadly, Tom passed away June 7, 2014 only five weeks after their move to Grinnell. Helen continued to live in the apartment until her death. Helen is survived by four nephews Robert (Renetta) Plander of Toledo, Iowa, Joseph (Barbara) Bonyata of Oram, Utah, Tony (Nan) Bonyata of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, Philip (Mary) Bonyata of Genoa City, Wisconsin; and many great nephews and nieces; cousins; a special sister-in-law Beverly Hamblen and her husband Rev. James Hamblen of Winston Salem, North Carolina and their family. Helen was preceded in death by her parents James T. and Grace Simpson; one brother Robert Simpson; three sisters Doris Simpson, Betty Plander and Marilyn Bonyata; two nephews James Plander and R. Timothy Simpson.
