Helen I. Adkins, 94, of Grinnell, died on Tuesday, February 25, 2014, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Private family services will be held at a later date at the Friends Cemetery in New Sharon. The Smith Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Helen was born on June 21, 1919, in New Sharon, Iowa to Weldon and Hazel Mortland Shaw. She was raised in New Sharon and graduated from New Sharon High School with the Class of 1936. On February 21, 1940, she was married to Lloyd W. Adkins in Washington, Iowa. The couple lived briefly at Barnes City before moving to a farm near New Sharon. Following the death of her husband in 1954, she moved into New Sharon and began working for Crystal Cleaners in Oskaloosa. She worked for Crystal Cleaners for over 30 years and moved to Grinnell following her retirement. She is survived by her children, Jim (Ramona) Adkins of Urbandale and Linda Collett of Grinnell; six grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and one great great grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brother, Don Shaw; and her son-in-law, Bill Collett.
