Harry was born on September 17, 1920, to Fred and Myrtle Ferneau Duffus in Malcom, Iowa. He was raised in the Brooklyn area and attended rural school near Carnsforth. Following the death of his mother he was raised by Fred and Mable Slaymaker. During World War II he served with the United States Army. On June 30, 1945, he was married to Dorothy Schaffer in Marysville, Kansas. The couple lived in Lincoln, Nebraska and later moved to Brooklyn. They owned and operated a grain and livestock farm east of Brooklyn. The couple retired in 1987 and moved to Grinnell. Harry has resided at the Brooklyn Estates since March of 2010. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Malcom and the Harold E. Smith American Legion Post #54. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing and playing cards. He is survived by one daughter, Susan (Allan) Peterson of Victor; one son, Douglas (Merna) Duffus of Grinnell; three grandchildren, Stefanie Vaverka of Brooklyn, Jonathan Blomme of Brooklyn and Julie Ryan of Marengo; and seven great grandchildren, Colton and Camiel Blomme, Max and Colette Franks, Luke, Grace and Hannah Ryan. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; one daughter, Sally Lynn Duffus; one sister, Hazel Foster; and one brother, Harold Duffus. Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church of Malcom. The family will recieve relatives and friends for lunch in the hall of the Malcom Presbyterian Church following the graveside service on Tuesday.
