Harrison Griffin Dawes, 94 of Grinnell and formerly of Winterset and West Lake Okoboji, Iowa, died Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 27, at the Grinnell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mr. Gordon Packard, retired, and Deacon Diane Eberhart, officiating. Organist will be Kathleen Heffner. Pallbearers will be Michael Patrick, Rebecca Dawes, Derek Lewis, Lynn Kuchemann, Kevin Costigan, Michele Costigan and Greg Dawes. Burial will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 28, at the Spirit Lake Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Spirit Lake. Memorial Contributions may be directed to the Okoboji United Methodist Campground. Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell is handling arrangements. The son of Richard and Clara Griffin Dawes, he was born December 9, 1910, in Kirkland, New York. He received his formal education in the Clinton, New York public school system, graduating from high school in 1930. He then attended Hamilton College and Taylor University and then transferred to Morningside College in 1935, graduating in 1937. He graduated from Garrett Theological Seminary in 1943. While in seminary, he served the Maple Park and Cortland, Illinois Methodist Churches. He was united in marriage to Donnis V. Horine February 18, 1933, in Rigdon, Indiana. Two sons were born to this union of 71 years. Upon arriving in Iowa, he served the Superior-Montgomery Methodist Churches fro 1934-35. While attending Morningside College, he served as pastor of the St. James Methodist Church in Sioux City. Upon completion of his seminary education, he served United Methodist churches in Quimby-Goodhope for 3 years; Sutherland (1943), Sutherland-Moneta (1945-47); Eagle Grove (1947-54); Estherville (1954-57); District Superintendent of the Spencer District of the United Methodist Church (1957-62); Clinton First United Methodist Church (1962-67); Storm Lake (1967-76), at which time he retired. Following his first retirement, he served the Rossie United Church of Christ from 1976-1996. The couple built their retirement home on West Lake Okoboji in 1976. His interests included: gardening, fishing, reading, wood-working, and landscaping endeavors. He was intimately involved in the Okoboji United Methodist Campsite, serving as Dean of several large camps. He had a profound impact on many young people attending the camps, most especially, inspiring his two sons to pursue professional ministry. Survivors include his wife, Donnis of Winterset; two sons and their spouses, Gilbert and Inez Dawes of St. Charles and Delbert and Carolyn Dawes of Grinnell; seven grandchildren, Greg Dawes, Rebecca Dawes, Lynn Kuchemann, Michele Costigan, Jeffrey Ireland, Juli Leath, and Jessica Ireland; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
