Harold D. Schlatter, age 79, of Grinnell, died on Monday, March 30, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. A celebration of his life will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 3, 2015, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Interment will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, April 3, 2015, at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Hazleton, Iowa. Visitation will be held prior to his service beginning at 9:00 am. on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be designated to the Harold D. Schlatter Memorial Fund, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Harold Dea Schlatter was born on Jan 16, 1936 at the family farm southwest of Hawkeye, Iowa to Carl A. and Ella (Guenther) Schlatter. He was baptized and confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye by the Rev. E.W. Kramer. He attended Bethel #5 rural school and high school at Hawkeye and Randalia, graduating from Randalia High School on May 15, 1953. In January 1955, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country until November 1958, when he was honorably discharged. After being discharged, he began farming with his father on the Sumner family farm. On June 20, 1959, he was united in marriage to Lois Kaune, who was his companion and best friend in their marriage of 55 years. To this union, six children were born Scott (Deb) of Lincoln, Nebraska; Mark (Shelley) of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Sheryl (Bryce) Harmon of Mason City, Iowa; Bruce (Julie) of Overland Park, Kansas; Brian (Kelli) of Duncanville, Alabama; and Blair (Anna) of North Richland Hills, Texas. They have been blessed with 12 grandchildren, 9 step grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren. During their marriage, Harold and Lois lived in Sumner, Oelwein, Northwood and Grinnell, Iowa. After farming for 10 years, he began selling farm equipment which he enjoyed very much. In 1988, his hobby of collecting farm toys became the family business. This adventure allowed them to travel and to meet people throughout the United States. During his younger years, Harold served on the Hawkeye Church Council, Fayette County Farm Bureau Board, Paint Horse Club of Iowa and the Athletics Booster Club at Northwood Kensett High School. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Donald, in-laws Ivan and Mildred Kaune, brother- in- laws, Marvin, Robert, LaVerne and Daryl Kaune.
