Obituary

Harold Olaf Hanson, 77, of Grinnell died Saturday, August 12, 2006, at his home. A funeral service for Mr. Hanson will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 15, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell with Pastor Stephen Jasch officiating and assisted by Pastor Herb Knudten, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Grinnell. Organist will be Cheryl Irland and vocalist will be Roger Henderson. Pallbearers are Vern Anderson, Ken Bladow, Clem Bodensteiner, Clint Koppang, Dr. Dave Smith, and Glen Soderberg. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation with the family present will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Monday evening at the Smith Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church or Grinnell Regional Hospice. The son of Olaf and Agnes Anderson Hanson, he was born June 19, 1929, in Drayton, North Dakota. He grew up in Pembina, North Dakota, where his father was a Customs Officer at the U.S. Border. He attended elementary and high school in Pembina and after his junior year he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. He served for 3 years and spent time in several ports and two years in Juneau, Alaska. After his military experience, he enrolled at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. On June 21, 1953, he was married to Adelaide (Addy) Koppang, in Portland, North Dakota. He co-owned and managed a grocery store for 4 years. He then managed a Ben Franklin Store for 2 years in Mayville, North Dakota and from their purchased and owned a variety store in Chatfield, Minnesota for 8 years. In 1966 he purchased the Ben Franklin Store in Grinnell, which he operated for 25 years. After he retired the couple wintered in Arizona for 12 years, where he enjoyed golf and tennis and made many friends. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and his favorite vacations were in Northern Minnesota with his family. Harold was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was also active in Kiwanis Club, Grinnell Ambassador Club, and Junior Achievement. Survivors include his wife, Addy of Grinnell; three sons and their spouses, Steve and Sharon Hanson of Milford, Iowa, Dave and Kay Hanson, of Manchester by the Sea, Massachusetts, and Tom and Peg Hanson of Stillwater, Minnesota; three sisters, Sonia Thompson of Fargo, North Dakota, Carol Schwinkendorf of Scottsdale, Arizona and Helen Helegland of Longmont, Colorado; and five grandchildren, Kristen, Tate, Gabe, Nathan, and Sam Hanson. He was preceded in death by his parents.
