Obituary

Gloria J. Goeke, age 68 of Grinnell, died on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at Urbandale Health Care Center in Urbandale, Iowa. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 27, 2018 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Pastor John Epperson officiating. Interment will be at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom. A reception will be held at the Pizza Ranch in Grinnell. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home and her family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be designated to PALS (Poweshiek Animal League Shelter), mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with Gloria's family at www.smithfh.com. Gloria Jean Minenga was born on April 25, 1950 to Carroll and Madelyn (Hicks) Minenga in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She was raised in the Grinnell area and graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1968. She attended Thompson School of Beauty in 1969 and was a beautician in Grinnell for many years. Gloria received her AA degree and AAS degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from Des Moines Area Community College 1983. She dedicated many years to Grinnell Regional Medical Center as a Medical Laboratory Technician, retiring in 2009. Gloria's family was first and foremost. She always held a positive outlook on life and had an infectious laugh. Her enjoyments were crocheting, fishing, gambling at area casinos, reading, and watching her favorite television shows like Criminal Minds, Master Chef and Twilight Zone/Alfred Hitchcock. She always loved a good medical show, particularly Grey's Anatomy, ER, Chicago Hope and most recently The Resident. Gloria is survived by her daughter, Kenndrea (Matthew) Wolka of Grinnell; her beloved granddogs Chauncey, Christian and Elliot; siblings, Micheal (Dawn) Minenga of Nebraska, Debbie (Les) Sitzes of Arkansas, Judith (Jerry) Miller of Burlington, Iowa, Pat Weimer of Keokuk, Iowa, and Reggie Gray of Newton, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Stephen and Patrick, who died in infancy; and her sister, Karla.
