A funeral service for Gladys will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 18, 2012 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Burial will follow in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation will be held from 12 noon to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2012, with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday evening. Memorials may be directed to the Hidden Acres Christian Center, 3837 Union Avenue, Dayton, Iowa 50530. Gladys was born on January 24, 1914 in Cora, Missouri to Nova and Ola Straley Taylor. She attended schools in Sullivan County, Missouri. On April 24, 1938, she was united in marriage to Leo Reid in Green City, Missouri. The couple were blessed with three children, Gary, Jerry and Karen. They moved to the Kellogg area in 1946 and lived there until moving to Grinnell in 1954. Gladys worked at various factories in Grinnell and at Grinnell College in the housekeeping and food service departments, until her retirement in 1976. Gladys' passion in life was her love for her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved nature and teaching her family all about the beauty God had provided them to enjoy in life. She made a mark on every ones lives she touched and her door was always open to anyone in need of a good meal or a bed. She also enjoyed making bread, bird watching and taking long walks. She never drove a car, so that was her only way of getting around without depending on others. She was a very independent and caring person. Gladys is survived by her son, Jerry (Phyllis) Reid and daughter, Karen (Gordon) Ashby, both of Grinnell, five grandchildren, David Ashby, Daniel Reid, Michael Reid, Michelle Suckow and Jenna Reid, five great grandchildren, Katie Suckow, Nick Suckow, Alex Reid, Ian Reid and Cuyler Reid. Also surviving are three siblings, Everett Taylor and Ann (Everett) Bausell, both of Browning, Missouri and Betty Taylor of Grinnell. Gladys died at the age of 98, on Monday, May 14, 2012 at the Grinnell Health Care Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo, in 1981, son, Gary Reid in 2008, two brothers, Waylon and Earl Taylor and two sisters, Peg Pierce and Elsie Durr.
