Gladys Hendrickson, age 93, of Grinnell, died on Sunday, September 24, 2017, at the Mayflower Community Health Care Center in Grinnell.
As per Gladys' wish, her body has been donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine for scientific research. A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, November 2, 2017, in the Carman Center of the Mayflower Community, 600 Park Street, Grinnell, IA 50112.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Grinnell Regional Hospice and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Condolences may be shared with her family online at www.smithfh.com.
Gladys (Buchan) Beaty Hendrickson was born in Peterhead, Scotland on April 5, 1924, to Christina (Nichol) Buchan and George Buchan. She lived in Scotland and Ireland, before venturing to Canada and finally San Francisco, California, where she was educated.
On July 28, 1945, she married Warren Scott Beaty at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Warren and Gladys settled in Grinnell, Iowa, where Warren was in partnership with his brother, Wilson in the Grinnell Motor Company Dealership, dealing in the sales of Dodge and Plymouth automobiles for 42 years. Gladys was employed by Grinnell College for 29 years and retired in 1986. She and Warren lived at Rock Creek Lake until Warren's death in 1989.
In 1992, Gladys married Marion Hendrickson. They made their home on the family farm, near Brooklyn, Iowa until 1996. At that time, they moved to the Mayflower Community. Gladys lost Marion in 1997.
Gladys is survived by two sons, Scott Reid (Brenda Bush) Beaty of Scottsdale, Arizona, and David Bruce (Paula VanderBeek) Beaty of Oskaloosa, Iowa; granddaughter (David's daughter), Casey (Dr. Brad) Melhus of Des Moines, Iowa; stepchildren, David (Rose) Hendrickson, Linda (Terry) Lowry, Paul (Jan) Hendrickson, Rachael (Hendrickson) Browder; and 8 step-grandchildren.
