Obituary

Gladys Marie Springer Pagel Butler died on Monday, June 8, 2020, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 pm, Friday, June 12, 2020 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with visitation one hour prior to the start of the service. Burial will be held at Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman, Iowa following the service. Memorial Contributions may be directed to Shriners Hospitals for Children or to the American Cancer Society and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Gladys was born December 21, 1929 to David William Sr. and Lela I. Hinshaw Springer in Newton, Iowa. She received her education in the Grinnell public school system, graduating with the class of 1947. On April 8, 1948 Gladys was united in marriage to Merl L. (Bud) Pagel at the home of her brother Dave, Jr. in Grinnell, Iowa. To this union five children were born: Gary, Richard, Rebbecca, Cheri, and Robin. The union ended in divorce. Gladys Worked at One Minute in Kellogg, Iowa until she had children at which time, she was a farm wife and mother. In 1967 she worked part time in the kitchen of the Grinnell Sale Barn in addition to farming. When Bud and Gladys divorced in 1971, she went to work for Grinnell House, the Grinnell College guest house. She worked there for 10 years. On September 29, 1973 Gladys wed Donald Lee Butler at Oak Grove Friends Church, south of Grinnell. The lived in and around the Grinnell area until 1982 when they moved to California. While in California Gladys and Don managed apartment complexes. They moved back to Gilman, Iowa in 1991 to be closer to family. Gladys was known for her baking skills especially cookies and cinnamon rolls. She enjoyed reading and baking. Gladys was a member of the Gilman Legion Auxiliary and Grace United Methodist Church. Gladys is survived by her Children Gary (Kathy) Pagel of New Sharon, Richard Pagel of Brooklyn, Rebbecca (Dean) Roth of Brooklyn, Cheri Jacobsen of Mitchellville, and Robin (Frank) Wilcox of Donna, TX; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and her sister Dorothy (Ben) Weiderkehr of Boise, ID. She was preceded in death by her parents, David, Sr. and Lela Springer, her husband Donald Lee Butler, two brothers David, Jr. and Edward Springer, two sisters Louella Springer (stillborn) and Lela June Springer Barnes Mason, her in-laws Ward and Emma Pagel and Dewey and Faye Butler, one grandson Ryan David Pagel in infancy, two daughter-in-laws Barbara Johanness Pagel and Betty Stewart Pagel and one son-in-law Allard Jacobsen.
