Bill Dimit, 88, of Ottumwa, died on Thursday, December 8, 2016, at the Ottumwa Hospice serving Davis and Wapello Counties. A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m., Monday, December 12, 2016 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. John Epperson officiating. Casket Bearers will be David McCluskey, Greg Dimit, Randy Cantrell, Greg Cantrell, Mark Dimit and Paul Dimit. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell beginning 9:00 a.m. on Monday and the family will be present at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Monday. Should friends desire, memorials in Bill's name may be directed to the Ottumwa Hospice House or to the Grinnell High School Athletic Department, and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Bill was born on August 26, 1928, in Bismarck, North Dakota to Harold and Helen Gregson Dimit. The family moved to a farm south of Grinnell, Iowa when Bill was 2 years old. He was raised on the family farm, attended a rural school, and later graduated with the Class of 1946 from Grinnell High School. During his school years, he was a member of the Grinnell High School football and baseball teams. Following his education, he worked as a carpenter in Grinnell, and for the Morrison-Shults Glove Company. Bill later became employed as a welder at the Donaldson Company in Grinnell, and worked there for over 30 years. On July 2, 1994, he was united in marriage to Sharon Faulkner Cantrell at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Bill and Sharon had a very happy life with their blended family and living on their acreage near Ottumwa. After retirement, Bill stayed busy doing handyman projects around the house and caring for his yard. Many in the community will remember Bill as an avid Grinnell High School athletics fan and officiating sporting events in the Grinnell School District and the Parks and Recreation leagues. He was later honored as a member of the Iowa Softball Hall of Fame. Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling in the Grinnell Bowling League. One of his accomplishments was bowling two perfect games. While living in Grinnell, he was an active member of the Grinnell Elks Lodge and the Grinnell Eagles Club. Bill is survived by his loving wife of twenty-two years, Sharon Dimit of Ottumwa; his two sons, Dave (Winonah) McCluskey of West Des Moines and Greg (Chris) Dimit of Burr Ridge, IL; his step children, Tina Fleming of Pleasantville, IA, Randy (Melisha) Cantrell of Dallas, IA, Greg Cantrell of Bloomfield, IA and Nancy (Brian) DeMoss of Ottumwa, IA; twelve grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and two brothers, Robert (Sue) Dimit and Jim Dimit, both of Grinnell; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
