Obituary

Gerald L. Deppe, 91, of Grinnell, and formerly of Kellogg, died December 10, 2010, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 14, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with his grandson, Matthew Siebert of Dayton, Iowa officiating. Pallbearers will be Don Benson, Christopher Castillo, Larry and Ronnie Deppe, Bill Doud, and Ron McKeag. Honorary bearers will be Dave Campbell, Bob Modlin, Keith Van Dyke, and Charles Van Hoosen. Burial will be in Our Silent Cemetery in Kellogg. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Smith Funeral Home and where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 Monday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to Blessman Ministries, where his granddaughter, Lisa serves as a missionary in South Africa, or St. Francis Manor Building Fund in Grinnell. Gerald was born October 18, 1919, at the family home in Jasper County, near Newton, the son of Herman Charles and Gladys Florence Shill Deppe. He attended rural school near his home. On April 13, 1940, he was united in marriage to Arlene Marie Doud, in Unionville, Missouri. The couple lived on several farms near Grinnell and later moved to Kellogg in 1954. He farmed and worked at Farmers Elevator in Kellogg for a few years and then began his employment as a custodian with the Kellogg School District in 1960. He retired in 1981. Following the death of his wife on July 9, 1985, he was united in marriage to Ruth Goreham on September 27, 1986, in Grinnell, where the couple made their home. He had been a resident at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell since May 5, 2008. Gerald was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kellogg. He loved gardening, working on lawn mowers and other motor vehicles, and was an avid fan of fast-pitched softball. He held a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed traveling. Survivors include three daughters, Diana (Keith) Van Dyke of Commerce City, Colorado, Deborah (Dave) Campbell of Grimes, and Marla (Bob) Modlin of Kellogg; one sister, Maxine Wilson of Grinnell; one brother, Bud Deppe of Grinnell; seven grandchildren, Lisa Berry, Richard (Joyce) Van Dyke, Felicia (Rob) Scott, Charise (Christopher) Castillo, Melissa (Mark) Burtlow, Matthew (Dani) Siebert, and Megan Siebert; and ten great-grandchildren, Kari Shadley, Jeanette Van Dyke, Mycah Freeman, Moriah, Jordan and Kaitlyn Scott, Cheradee and Cameren Castillo, and Leah and Jonah Siebert. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Arlene; his second wife, Ruth; one daughter, Sherry Van Hoosen; one son, Donald Leroy Deppe; one brother, Albert; and two sisters, Della Springer and Bernice Winchell.
