Obituary

Genevieve Mae Bailey, 84, of Grinnell died of cancer on January 7, 2011, while under the care of her family and Grinnell Regional Hospice. A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Genevieve Mae Bailey Memorial Fund and sent in care of the Bailey Family to Peggy Paxton, P.O. Box 263, LeGrand, Iowa 50142. Genevieve was born March 2, 1926, in Grinnell, the daughter of Martin Hans and Margaret 'Mae' Elmore Paulson. Her parents farmed west of Grinnell and she was one of eight children. She graduated from Grinnell High School in 1944. On January 6, 1945, she was united in marriage to John 'Bud' Bailey, in Newburg. The couple farmed in the Newburg area and moved to their own farm, also in the Newburg area, in 1959. They later moved to Grinnell in 1996. Genevieve loved her six children. She sewed many of their clothes and enjoyed tending to her large garden. She was a member of the Jewel Box Quilt Guild and made many quilts for her family and friends. She enjoyed riding her bicycle around town to garage sales and to get her groceries. She rode her bike until last summer when she became ill. She attended the Grinnell First Baptist Church. Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Peggy (Gary) Paxton of LeGrand and Kathie Karamoschos of Wesley Chapel, Florida; three sons, Ed (Cathy Soutter) Bailey of rural Gilman, Jim (Billie) Bailey of Cedar Falls, and Bill (Kathy) Bailey of Grinnell; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Taylor and Phyllis (Kenneth 'Pepper') Saunders of Grinnell; and one brother, Keith (Shirley) Paulson of rural Grinnell, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. In death she has rejoined her parents, loving husband, John 'Bud'; a daughter, Bonnie Casey; a grandson, Chad Vint; three brothers, Howard, Merle and Ross (in infancy); and one sister, Doris Sleeuwenhoek.
