Obituary

Gene F. Shook, 74, of Grinnell died on May 14, 2020, at UnityPoint Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines of natural causes. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 19th, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. Phil Culham, pastor of Prairie Lakes Church in Grinnell, officiating. Pallbearers will be Mason Walk, Keith Bogard, Earl Bogard, Ronnie Gitautis, Gary McCulley, and Greg McCulley. Burial with military honors will be held at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the start of the service. Memorial contributions may be designated to the Grinnell Volunteer Fire Department. Gene was born on August 31, 1945, in Iowa City, the son of Kenneth Kay and Nellie Leon (Van Veen) Shook. He was raised in Grinnell and attended school in the Grinnell School District. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. On April 26, 1971, he was united in marriage to Caroline K. Linn, in Jacksonville, Illinois. Gene gained a son, Kevin and a daughter, Karen. Another daughter, Kelly was born to this union. A union of 49 years! He was not only a wonderful husband but his kids would like it noted that he was the best dad you could ever ask for to all his children. Gene was employed with Miracle Recreation, Grinnell College, and later with St. Francis Manor. He retired in 2007. He loved to deer hunt, loved old cars, and traveling. His travels included Alaska, Hawaii, the northeast, Las Vegas, and Branson. Gene could always be found working on an old house or riding around town, possibly picking up cans or bottles. Survivors include his wife, Caroline of Grinnell; his children, Kevin (Chris Canfield) Kinzebach of Hiawatha, Karen (Greg) Giesken of Ravenwood, Missouri, and Kelly (Dave) Folkmann of Guernsey; three grandchildren, Kassie, Mason, and Kadon; two great-grandchildren, Harley and Elon; and four brothers, Lon (Joyce) of Grinnell, Gary of Tama, George (Shirley) of Newton, and Jeff (Janet) of Mystic. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister-in-law, Marie Shook; two nephews, Larry and Ron Shook; and a niece, Susan Harvey.
