Obituary

Gene Engelbarts, 61, of Malcom, died Sunday, June 5, 2005, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral services for Mr. Engelbarts will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 8, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Pallbearers will be Anthony, Dennis and Roger Engelbarts, Robert Martin, and Scott and Verl Shook. Burial will be in Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Gene Engelbarts Memorial Fund. The son of Earl Carl and Dorothy Genevieve Minear Engelbarts, he was born April 25, 1944, in Grinnell. He was raised on a farm near Malcom and was a 1964 graduate of the Iowa School for the Deaf. Following his education he remained at the school and was employed for several years in the laundry department. He then returned to the family farm where he contributed for many years in running a successful farm operation. He was an avid sports fan and for many years actively followed the Montezuma Braves. He enjoyed bowling, solving cross-word puzzles, and playing Play Station 2 with his nieces and nephews. Survivors include his parents of Malcom; two sisters, Bonita Martin of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Barbara Shook of Malcom; two brothers, Roger and Dennis Engelbarts, both of Malcom; several nieces and nephews; and five great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Carl Engelbarts in 1987.
