Fred Martens, age 71, of Coralville and formerly of Marengo, died on Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at Windmill Manor in Coralville. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 27, 2016, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Marengo with Rev. Andrew Gray officiating. Pallbearers are Mark, Dan, Michael and Max Martens, and Trent Miller. Burial will be in Goldenrod Cemetery in Deep River. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to the Fred Martens Memorial Fund, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 485, Victor, Iowa 52347. Fredrick William Martens was born on July 24, 1944, near Deep River, Iowa, to George and Lilia (Beyers) Martens. He was raised and educated in Deep River. Fred honorably served in the United States Army from 1965 until 1967 and was stationed at Fort Hamilton in New York. He returned to Iowa and resided in Keota, where he operated a drainage tile operation. He then was employed as a butcher at various grocery stores in the area. His enjoyments included taking long bike rides and collecting toy tractors. Fred is survived by his children, Mark (Amy) Martens of Wellman, Iowa, Kim Kram of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Daniel Martens of Chicago, Illinois; 9 grandchildren; one great grandchild; and siblings, Merle (Arlette) Martens of West Des Moines, Iowa and Oris (Betty) Martens of Middle Amana, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Merita Brecht and Eulalia Garrett.
