Farrell E. Dayton, 80, of New Sharon died January 24, 2013, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center under Hospice care. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 28, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Pastor Jim Sears, pastor of the Christian Life Church in Newton, officiating. Organist will be Marilynn Kriegel. Vocalists will be Mary Jo Seaton and Carol Schmidt. Pallbearers will be Gene Kephart, Bill Kephart and Scott Kephart, Daron Blanke, Garry W. Dayton and Mike Boots. Honorary bearers will be Rick Pinkerton, Jim Pinkerton, David E. Mills, Jason Boots, Ryan Dayton, Matt Dayton, Sandy Johnston, Stacy Hartson, Amanda Boots, Michele Kannmore, Delaney Sharp, Jessica Dewey and Lulu Dayton. Burial will be in Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Smith Funeral Home with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 Sunday evening. Farrell was born October 11, 1932, in Grinnell, the daughter of Bryan and Lucy Trease Davis. She was raised in Grinnell and received her education in the Grinnell School District. She was married to Donald Halterman and with this union two children were born, Lucy "Tootie" and Sharon. On March 22, 1966, she was united in marriage to Eugene Dayton, in Kirksville, Missouri. The couple lived on a farm southwest of Grinnell for a few years and in 1968 they moved to their current farm north of New Sharon. In addition to raising their own children they also raised three grandsons, Gene, Bill and Scott Kephart. Farrell was employed for her mother-in-law at the Lone Elm Nursing Home in Grinnell for many years and after her marriage to Eugene she helped with the farm chores including milking cows. She later was employed at Friendship Manor in Grinnell and then at the Malcom Locker. She retired in 1994. She was a devoted volunteer at the Malcom American Legion for many years and loved sharing her time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed attending dances in the area and listening and dancing to the music. She was an avid fan of All-Star wrestling and the WWE. She enjoyed watching soap operas, playing bingo, crocheting and gardening. Survivors include her husband, Eugene of New Sharon; her children, Sharon (Dennis) Blanke of New Sharon, Barbara Boots and Sally (David) Mills of Grinnell and Garry (Lynn) Dayton of Montezuma; one brother, Earl Davis of Malcom; 18 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Tootie and her husband, Vernon; one son, Randy Dayton; a son-in-law, Clarence Pinkerton; one brother, Albert Davis and five half-brothers, Ray, Glenn, Bert, Clyde and Dale Phipps.
