Obituary

Eugene May, 65, of Malcom, died at his home on Saturday, December 20, 2025.

A private family graveside service will be held at Sheridan Cemetery north of Malcom.

The family will receive friends at the visitation held from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Monday, January 5, 2026 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.

Memorials may be designated to the Poweshiek County Fairgrounds Association or to the Malcom Fire Department and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home and Crematory, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with his family online at www.smithfh.com.

Eugene was born on March 1, 1960, in Grinnell, Iowa, to Robert and Theda (Slagle) May. He was raised on the family farm north of Malcom and graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1978.

During high school, Eugene worked at Campbell Implement in Grinnell. He later worked at VanWyk Freight Lines before beginning a long and dedicated career with Heartland Cooperative, where he worked for over 30 years.

Eugene enjoyed cooking and grilling, working on machinery, attending the Poweshiek County Fair, and he loved anything red—especially International Harvester (Case IH). He will be remembered as a big teddy bear, a friend to many, and a stranger to no one.

Eugene is survived by his siblings, Jim (Arlene) May of Malcom and Diane (Leroy) Foster of Malcom and their children, Tanner and Tucker Foster; and his children, Aaron (Megan) Grace of Grinnell and their children, Hunter, Wyatt and Garrett, and Lana (Tom) Sellner of Marion, Iowa and their son, Bennett. He was preceded in death by his parents.
