Ella Kriegel, age 98, of Grinnell, died on Saturday, February 2, 2013, at the Grinnell Health Care Center. A graveside service will be held 2:30 p.m., Thursday, February 7, 2013, at the Sheridan Cemetery northeast of Grinnell with the Rev. Keith Morrison, Grinnell Regional Hospice Chaplain, officiating. Memorials may be designated to the Sheridan United Methodist Church and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Ella was born the daughter of Charles and Teresa (Shadel) Mohrfeld on September 4, 1914, on the family farm in Sheridan Township north of Malcom, Iowa. She attended country schools near her home. On July 12, 1934, she was united in marriage with Raymond W. Kriegel in Grinnell, Iowa. The couple farmed in Sheridan Township until Raymond's death in 1987. Ella and Raymond dearly loved each other and they enjoyed traveling and taking long car rides on Sundays. Ella's enjoyments were visiting with her family and friends, tending to her flowers and garden, cross-stitching and embroidering, solving crossword puzzles, and collecting horses and carousels. Ella is survived by her son, Deane (Helen) Kriegel of Grinnell; two daughters, Beverly (Chuck) Welter of Ottosen, Iowa, and Joyce (Dr. Ronald) Hauser of Grinnell; 6 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond W. Kriegel; three brothers, Elmer, George and Earl Mohrfeld; and two sisters, Clara Weitzel and Lulu Smith.
