Obituary

Eleanor Olson McKeag, 96, of Grinnell died August 1, 2011, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 5, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. John Epperson officiating. Pallbearers will be Rick Jameson, Matt and Tom Martineau, Billy and Chris Olson, and Bob and John Sampson. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation with the family present will be held from 12:30 until service time Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the St. Francis Manor Foundation. Eleanor was born July 2, 1915, in Grinnell, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Louise Eichhorn Lunt. She was raised in Grinnell and was a 1935 graduate of Grinnell High School. On June 15, 1935, she was united in marriage to Raymond J. Olson, in Davenport. The couple farmed near Grinnell and she was employed at United Food Store in Grinnell. After Raymond died in 1972 she moved to Grinnell and was employed in the food service department at Grinnell Mutual Re-Insurance Company. She moved to Palo Alto, California for several years and later moved to Omaha and then Lincoln, Nebraska. While living in Omaha and Lincoln she was employed at the University of Nebraska. On August 15, 1983, she was united in marriage to Charles McKeag, in Lincoln. Charles died in 2001 and she returned to Grinnell to make her home. She had been a resident at St. Francis Manor since 2007. Eleanor was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, past president of Pythian Sisters, and past secretary of Royal Neighbors. She was a member of the Methodist faith and was a former Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed cooking and baking,flowers, and spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed supporting the Iowa State Cyclones and San Francisco Giants. Survivors include five children, Gary Olson and Chuck Olson of Grinnell; Judy Helms of Overland Park, Kansas, Helen Jo Martineau of Kewanee, Illinois and Benny Olson of Wagner, South Dakota; 2 step-children, Charles McKeag of Omaha and William McKeag of Mexico; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; 3 brothers, Roger, Andrew and Shirley Lunt; and a sister, Helen Elliott.
