Elaine Lewis, 78, of Grinnell, died on January 10, 2020, at the Mayflower Community Health Care Center in Grinnell.
A Celebration of Life gathering has been scheduled from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, January 22nd, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.
Memorial contributions may be designated to the Alzheimer's Association.
Elaine was born on January 6, 1942, in Fayette, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Maude Timmerman Kuhens. She was raised in Fayette and was a 1960 graduate of Fayette High School, where she excelled playing basketball.
On February 19, 1960, she was united in marriage to Michael R. Lewis, in Los Angeles. For many years, the couple lived in various communities where Mike's employment took them while raising their five children. They moved to Grinnell in 1976 and she was employed with GTE from 1983 until her retirement in 2000. They built a home in Malcom in 1989 and from 2004 until 2011 they lived in their motor home while traveling throughout the United States, including visiting many National Parks. They were part of a group called the "Kings of the Road!" They returned to Grinnell in 2011.
Elaine had a passion for dancing throughout her life, which included dance competition and teaching. She loved to dance! She enjoyed watching her families sporting events and coaching softball. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting.
Survivors include her husband, Mike of Grinnell; four children, Michael R. (Tammi) Lewis, Jr. of New Boston, Texas, Terry Lewis of Grinnell, Lisa (Scott) Sharp of Grinnell, and Kristin (Randy) Smith of Orangevale, California; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, David Lewis; and two sisters, Lucy Lamphier and Betty Mae Downing.
